Herbal Medicine Consultation

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the world's oldest healing arts, with a tradition spanning more than two thousand years. Rooted in the same foundational principles as acupuncture and bodywork, herbal therapy uses plant parts and other natural substances for therapeutic purposes. Over 80 percent of the global population continues to rely on botanical remedies as a primary modality for the treatment of disease, and approximately 25 percent of all currently used pharmaceuticals — including aspirin — have their origins in plants.

The NYCHP Herbal Medicine Teaching Clinic offers half-hour consultation appointments to community members seeking an individualized herbal assessment and recommendation. All consultations are conducted by advanced student practitioners under the direct supervision of licensed clinical faculty.

Herbal therapy can serve as a valuable complementary approach for patients on conventional drug therapies or as a natural alternative to over-the-counter treatments. Chinese herbal medicine is traditionally dispensed as herbal teas with specific daily doses. More modern formulations include herbs in pill, granulated, powder, tincture, extract, and topical forms. The on-campus Herbal Dispensary carries a full range of traditional Chinese herbal products, dispensed only after consultation and recommendation from a clinic health care professional.

Conditions commonly addressed through Chinese herbal medicine include:

Common cold, flu, bronchitis, and asthma; nausea, ulcers, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, colitis, constipation, and diarrhea; kidney and gallstones; urinary tract infections; skin diseases; anxiety, depression, and headaches; arthritis, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Herbal medicine is also used in pediatrics, obstetrics, and gynecology.
