Acupuncture Teaching Clinic

The Acupuncture Teaching Clinic at New York College of Health Professions provides affordable, fully supervised acupuncture treatments to members of the community. All treatments are performed by advanced student interns under the direct supervision of New York State licensed acupuncturists. The clinic is part of NYCHP's academic health care teaching clinics, which deliver over 5,500 patient treatments annually.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing art that has helped billions of people for over 2,000 years. The technique involves the insertion of fine, sterilized, disposable needles into specific points on the body to regulate the flow of energy — restoring balance, removing blockages, and supplementing energy where necessary. Acupuncture points lie along energy channels that are directly related to specific organs and physiological functions, a principle confirmed by modern research demonstrating observable physiological changes through point stimulation.

Acupuncture is capable of inducing deep relaxation and has been found to be extremely useful for patients who have either not responded to conventional forms of treatment or wish to augment Western medical care. During a typical treatment, patients wear a gown and are treated on a massage table. The technique is essentially painless.

Acupuncture has been widely used for pain relief and is growing in use not only to treat and cure, but also to maintain good health. It has been proven effective in both children and adults for conditions including:

Chronic and acute back and neck pain, headaches, arthritis, sciatica, asthma, diabetes, colitis, gastrointestinal disorders, genito-urinary conditions, hypertension, palsy, impotence, and the common cold. Acupuncture is also an extremely useful modality for prevention of illness and maintenance of overall wellness.

Supervised Clinical Training

All acupuncture treatments in the teaching clinic are conducted by advanced student interns who have completed extensive didactic training and passed a Clinic Entrance Exam. Student interns perform the entire intake — including pulse and tongue diagnosis — and then collaborate with their licensed supervisor to determine a diagnosis, treatment principle, and appropriate treatment plan. This model ensures every patient receives individualized care grounded in Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.
