ADA Policy & Disability Accommodations

New York College of Health Professions is committed to providing equal access to all enrolled students. In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the College shall take all necessary steps to ensure that no student with a disability is denied the benefits of, excluded from participation in, or otherwise subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity operated by the College due to the absence of educational auxiliary aids for students with impaired sensory, manual, or speaking skills.

In compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, the College shall furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services where necessary to afford an individual with a disability an equal opportunity to participate in, and enjoy the benefits of, a service, program, or activity conducted by the College.

Reasonable accommodations are determined on an individual basis. The following procedures have been implemented to ensure compliance with both Acts:

Accommodations Procedure

1. During the admissions process, the applicant identifies a special need or disability and completes the Request for Reasonable Accommodations Form pertaining to that need.
2. The disability is verified by an external source — such as a physician, psychologist, counselor, or certified helping professional. This verification becomes a permanent part of the student record.
3. The Office of Student Services reviews the applicant's file, identifies the required accommodation, and consults with the appropriate Programmatic Dean to determine whether the College can provide it. The College is not obligated to admit the applicant if the necessary assistance cannot be provided.
4. If the student is otherwise qualified and admitted under normal admissions standards, the Office of Student Services sends written notification to the appropriate Dean and each of the student's instructors identifying the student, the disability or special need, and the required accommodation. This accommodation is mandated.
5. The Office of Student Services maintains a notation on each student file regarding any special accommodations granted. At the end of each trimester, the Office of Student Services files a report certifying application of the special accommodation policy.
6. After admission, the above procedure is followed each trimester.
7. Internal forms for the administration of this policy are available through the Office of Student Services.
